Creating Calm at Home: Storage, Style, and Meaning
Every so often, a lovely question comes through from this community that makes me pause and think, and sometimes even inspires a whole blog post.
Recently, someone asked me how to create a calmer home when it feels like clutter is constantly getting in the way. They mentioned that while they loved the idea of a space that feels grounding and serene, their own home felt more chaotic, and they were looking for tips on storage and styling.
I know so many of us can relate to that feeling. We want our homes to feel calm and intentional, but everyday life (and the “stuff” that comes with it) can make it tricky. So today, I thought I’d share some of the advice I gave, simple and thoughtful ways to bring more calm into your space without stripping away the warmth or meaning.
1. Give Everything a Home
Calm doesn’t mean bare. To me, a calm home still feels full of warmth and meaning, but the key difference is that everything has a place.
• Keep what’s functional (the things you reach for daily).
• Keep what’s beautiful to you (even if others wouldn’t choose it).
• Keep what holds meaning (the pieces with a story).
Everything else can gently move on to a new home.
For the practical bits, cables, chargers and remotes - baskets are your best friend. They add texture when styled on a shelf, or can be tucked away inside a cupboard. No more rummaging when you need something!
2. Choose Storage That Feels Considered
Storage doesn’t have to look utilitarian. In fact, the right piece of furniture can elevate a room instantly.
• Built-ins: If you have the option, built-in cabinetry is brilliant for both function and a more intentional, tailored feel.
• Freestanding vintage finds: A shaker wardrobe, a glazed bookcase, or a simple chest of drawers can do the same job beautifully while adding character and patina.
• Upcycle and blend in: If you already have a piece you don’t love, or can get your hands on something second-hand, a simple paint job can transform it. I’m a big fan of colour drenching here, painting storage the same shade as your walls so it blends seamlessly into the room. It’s a great way to give older or less-loved pieces a fresh lease of life and keep the overall look calm and cohesive.
3. Colour as a Foundation of Calm
Colour plays such a big role in how a space makes us feel. Bright whites can sometimes feel stark or clinical, so I always recommend choosing a softer neutral, something with a warm undertone that complements your chosen feature colour.
From there, carry that softness through your textiles, ceramics, and accents. Even being mindful of wood tones can help: keeping them consistent within a room creates a more grounded, restful atmosphere.
4. The Joy of Editing
Decluttering is often the hardest part, but once you’ve let go of what no longer serves you, you’ll be left with a home that feels curated rather than crowded.
That’s when the real joy begins: styling and enjoying the pieces you’ve kept, knowing they’ve earned their place because they’re useful, meaningful, or simply beautiful to you.
This question was such a good reminder that storage and styling aren’t just about organisation, they’re about creating a home that supports how we want to feel.
If you’re in the middle of a big clear-out yourself, I hope these tips help you see that calm isn’t about perfection. It’s about intention, about surrounding yourself with pieces that add to your daily life, and finding storage solutions that feel as considered as the treasures they hold.
